Off-Grid Solar + Battery Simulator

This app shows how much it costs to have PV + Batteries meet most of a household’s energy needs, including cooking which is, by far, a household’s largest energy need. The main output is a graphic representation of the trade-off between cost and  the need for load flexibility.

Step 1: click on the map or type in the location

πŸ“ Location
e.g. -1.29 = Nairobi, Kenya
e.g. 36.82 = Nairobi, Kenya

Click the map to set lat/long. Drag to pan, scroll (or +/βˆ’) to zoom.

Step 2: Change the cost and load inputs if you want.

πŸ’° System Cost
Total installed cost incl. shipping dealer margins, & mounting
Total installed Cost per kWh of battery capacity
Flat cost, same across all configs
⚑ Your Energy Load
Served during daylight hours
Drawn from battery after sunset

Step 3: Enter the widest range you think might be appropriate to simulate.

πŸ”† System Configurations

Every combination of PV size Γ— battery size in the ranges below is simulated, so you can compare them directly.

PV array size (W)

Battery size (Wh)

⚠️ The location has changed since the last simulation. Results still reflect the old location β€” run the simulation again to update them.

Step 4:
πŸ“‰ Cost vs. Unmet kWh/Year

Click a dot to highlight the same configuration in the tables below.

Each dot is one PV/battery configuration. Green dots have no other configuration that's both cheaper and lower in unmet kWh; gray dots are dominated by at least one such configuration.

πŸ“„ Report Downloads a .rtf file readable in Word with your inputs and selected outputs.
πŸ† Cost Frontier

Configs where no other config is both cheaper and lower in unmet kWh, ordered most- to least-reliable. Marginal $/kWh is the extra cost per kWh of unmet energy avoided versus the next-cheaper frontier config; the cheapest config has none. Click a row to highlight the same configuration in the tables below.
